HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS<<
|
Emergency Preparation –
A Basic Plan
In preparation for a
major catastrophic
disaster you may be
forced to leave your
residence but even
if you stay certain
activities and
precautions are
needed. The
following and
attached sheets
outline some of
these essentials of
which attention to
food, water,
personal and home
protection,
communication, and
transportation are
basic.
Emergency Food
-
a minimum of a
three-day supply per
person including
commercially
prepared emergency
food ration bars and
plenty of frozen
easy to prepare
items.
Emergency Water
-
a minimum of a
three-day supply of
bottled drinking
water per person
with additional
water for personal
hygiene. As water
the most important
survival item to
have, water
purification tablets
might also be useful.
Personal and home
protection –
Inventorying
personal goods and
having essentials
like extra clothing,
blankets, pillows,
cash, medicines,
eyeglasses,
flashlights and
batteries packed or
right at hand is
necessary. If the
time comes to
evacuate already
having the means to
board up handy and
that electric and
water can be easily
shut off can save
many future
problems.
Communication
– Continuing to be
in contact with
community emergency
agencies can be very
beneficial.
Portable battery
operated radios
including weather
reporting sets might
need extra batteries
and cell phones need
to be fully
charged. Having a
list of needed phone
numbers and
informing others of
ways to contact and
locate you should be
arranged.
Transportation
– Providing for
the means to
evacuate or simply
to get to stores for
supplies needs to be
arranged well in
advance of emergency
warnings. Depending
on public agencies
including emergency
shelter should be
avoided if at all
possible. One is
well served to have
suitable
transportation that
can be easily packed
with the necessary
goods as mentioned
above.
